Born & Raised * A New Solo Show *

I am proud to present some preview images for my new show called "Born & Raised."

It will be on Friday February 24th, at Barber on 24th. (2401 Lombard Street).

The new drawings are inspired by the architecture of row homes throughout different neighborhoods in Philadephia, but mostly South Philly. The Opening Reception will be from 7pm to 10pm!

Happy New Years everyone! This year the card I made was done in pen and ink instead of acrylic paint. The drawing was done on a 9 by 12 sheet of bristol with Microns and other assorted pens and markers.

I recently finished this menu design for kid's place mats at Honey's Sit 'N Eat where I happen to be a waitress. It was fun trying to figure out activities that would appeal to kids of all ages.

It used to be that when I would travel I would read a lot of books, but recently I found that I get more inspired to draw more in my sketch book. Many of these were done after visiting places in England like Kew Gardens, the V&A museum, and different places throughout the countryside.

My dad did the drawing of the thatched roof house with the smoke coming out of the chimney.

Recently, I have completed this cover design and logo for the Philadelphia band Lady's new release, You & Me. I also did the type layout and design for the inside of the CD too. Lady is signed to Ropeadope, which is an awesome label!

I finally got to see the sign completed with the images that I illustrated that promotes keeping the bay water from being polluted and unsanitary. The images on the left side of the sign were all done by me!

My work for the show is concentrating mostly on urban gardening in containers and found objects, and features portraits of numerous trees, bushes, and flowers. To me gardening in containers is challenging, but it is a nice release to be able to turn my concrete patio into a mini forest, and I know many gardeners share the same feeling. Walking around the city I always check out all of the window boxes, tubs, ceramic pots, and other objects that are full of various kinds of foliage. I thought it would be perfect to make a series of paintings for people who also have a green thumb in this concrete jungle.

Been working on a few new projects. One is this illustrated map of yellowstone that I posted about awhile ago. I've been doing little paintings of the different sites in the national park that will all be imposed on one big map painting for print.

I also just picked up a gallery show with one other artist in July which will be at a very nice coffee shop in Center City called Chapterhouse. I am putting a couple older paintings in the show but also doing part of a new series about urban gardening and container gardening, which I thought was an appropriate theme since it is almost summer!

This painting features an orange tree, some blackeyed susans, ferns, and a pretty little calico.

The ELY's are such a defining moment of senior year at uarts. You spend months of planning, executing, reworking, etc. and as a result everybody ends up with lovely series of works to display to the school and to visitors. Good luck everyone. (There are awards involved.)

Keep the Bay Clean

The other part of this weekend I finished these pieces for a brochure and poster that my step mom and some other people are having printed for an environmental program in Seaside Park New Jersey, that promotes keeping storm drain and runoff water as clean and unpolluted as possible. There is a beautiful bay there, that many people enjoy crabbing, sailing, watching sunsets, and relaxing around.

A Green Weekend

I spent the first half of this weekend in March planting my new seeds for the spring/summer and repotting some cacti and succulents. I'm so excited to see what will actually grow for me! I have some tomatoes, spinach, mesclun greens, various herbs, green onions, and even cat grass for the cats to munch on.

I've never planted any seeds using these peat pellets, that expand into 1.5" round mounds of dirt, but I think they will work as my greens have already begun to sprout!

Below is my new jade plant I bought at the flower show, where I also purchased some special sand from arizona to put on the top of the soil.

So I know I'm not the only person that googles my name every few months or so. It's interesting to see how much of the google search is about you, and stuff that people have blogged about you that you never knew about! Well I found my step mom's sister's daughter's blog haha (my sorta cousin) and she had posted a painting of mine last year before the annual family jersey shore trip.

Cora has two blogs running that are both awesome. The first one called That's What She Baked looks as it sounds. It is about all of her baking endeavors featuring cookies, cupcakes, and so much more. I am jealous of her adorable cooking apron collection, as I have been shopping around for the perfect one for too long. She also has the blog that I was featured on called girl, you a hot mess where she posts everything pretty and artsy.

The second shout out was from my friend Daniel Fishel, who contributes to thinkfaesthetic. Fish and I graduated from uarts the same year. Right after school he started attending grad school at SVA and I think it's done him good. Here are some of his recent pieces I pulled from his website.

His newer color palettes have developed a certain maturity to them, that I am really enjoying. His work sets a certain mood that makes you feel that life is mundane but maybe not all that bad. Keep up the good work!

My friend Avalon Clare, who I have known for a couple years now, is having a solo show at Sweet Jane Vintage on East Passyunk Avenue in South Philadelphia. Sweet Jane is a cute store that sells vintage shoes, clothes, and accessories that I drool over everytime I go in there. I think it's awesome that they are featuring art in their store. Their gallery space is located in the back of the store along two walls, near the fitting rooms.

Here are some of Avalon's pieces that I really like!

My favorites are the one's where she has illustrated horses. It's nice when artists are able to take their love of something, and turn it into a great piece of work. Her color palettes are nice and simple, which makes the subject matter even stronger.

Fifty and Fifty

Here's a big project featuring a bunch of very talented individuals, that has been getting alot of hype in the design/illustration circuit. The website says:

50 AND 50 IS A COLLECTIVE, CURATED PROJECT WHERE FIFTY DESIGNERS ARE INVITED TO REPRESENT THEIR STATE BY ILLUSTRATING ITS MOTTO. Fifty and Fifty was created by Dan Cassaro, who is also a talented designer.

Jess Hische did the one for PA (which is currently my computer background).

Kansas was done by Luke Bott.

And Connecticut by one of my favorite illustrators Meg Hunt.

I like how all the designers incorporated the same simple color palette, which is a nice alternative to using the traditional red, white, and blue. It was nice to see how the different artists utilized hand done type and imagery to represent the mottos. Nice work!

My new personal project right now is making an illustrated map of Yellowstone National Park. I had the pleasure of having visited there last summer during my westward road trip. I know it's cheesy but seeing the forests and mountains there have left a lasting impression on my mind, and I would like to transfer this into a piece of work. Here are some cool reference pictures I've found that are becoming my inspiration.

I plan to combine some traditional map layouts, with some hand lettering, and little spot illustrations of the different attractions and animals. If you've never really checked out Yellowstone, Ken Burns has a great series on pbs called "The National Parks: America's Best Idea," that features yellowstone and many other beautiful sites in the US.

So i've been trying to paint figures more and i knew for a long time that I wanted to capture my beautiful roommate caitlin with my brush, and after much time and effort, this is my final! She is a person with a complex yet refined personality, which I was trying to express with the border around her. She is also a children's book artist (caitlinwelsh.com) so I associated these animals, the barn owl and the fox, with her because she is great at painting them.

i recently had the pleasure of doing an editorial piece for the october fashion issue of grid magazine.. which is an environmental and sustainable living magazine in philadelphia. The article, written by a designer, was about using sustainable fibers to make clothing. Grid features an illustration on the back page of every monthly issue.

the first two weeks of this past month, my boyfriend and i took a road trip through indiana, south dakota, yellowstone (montana and wyoming), and north dakota. i must say i never realized how inspiring this country could be. i am sure lots of art will come out of this experience in the near future.

I am currently working on some vector art for a poster for art of recyling rain events which will be happening in manayunk this fall. Sometimes I find that in ways my digital process is very similar to my painting, in terms of building shape and form. The main difference is that I don't have to work from back to front as I do when I paint.

p.s. i don't know where i'd be with out my bamboo tablet, with creating these shapes, it's impossible to do with just a mouse.

i just finished working on this above logo design for one of my coworkers film production company, see all productions, it's always fun to do some work other than painting. working in illustrator has just as many challenges as working with a brush! find it harder to create smoothly curved shapes with vector art vs. using a paintbrush.

sometimes making paintings without sketching first, is a good way for me to loosen up. This painting was made with alot of pre-mixed colors that I had left over from previous pieces. The heart shape was something I had cut out of board that I was going to use for a gallery show, but never did. So I guess you could say it was made out of recycled art projects.

I feel like I've been working on this piece forever. It is for an international art contest based on the 7 deadly sins. The topic I chose is lust. The quote is based on a Portuguese song. Hey everyone! I feel as if I haven't been getting much art work done very recently, but alot of this was due to my new website that I posted a few weeks ago. This is the 3rd version of my illustration site. I was feeling as if the previous version was to complicated to navigate, so I tried to design it in a way to simplify it and make it more about the imagery. I had originally planned to redesign on indexhibit, but I could not figure out how to work it, so I ended up using dreamweaver again.

Hey all! this is a piece i just finished for a show at jinxed gallery on Saturday Feb. 13th. There are a TON of artists participating. Jinxed is located in the Piazza in Northern Liberties. I haven't been such a diligent blogger in the past month due to the amount of work I've been trying to get done for my solo show with TrickGo Clothing, which will be on December 11th.

I hand cut and painted these letters to make a customized sign for the window of the gallery at 12th and Pine. Below are some pieces I will have for sale at the opening.

This is the t shirt design that I did for the show, which will be printed on v neck american apparel shirts in the same warm grey color as the background.

I will post the flyer for the show with the official time and address once it's ready.

I haven't been blogging much recently, and for this I am sorry. I'm working on a project now trying to come up with t shirt designs for Trickgo clothing. These are my final sketches, I'll be working on the 1st and 3rd designs and creating the finals in Illustrator doing vector art. I just bought a new bamboo pen wacom tablet so I will be testing it out with this project.

Painting on Wood

So I've been really bad this month with updating the blog, but I've been working alot with my serving job. These pieces aren't really illustrative, but I like to paint what I feel like sometimes. No sketches involved.. just straight drawing and painting on the wood pieces. Wood is a fun surface to paint because it isn't as smooth as illustration board, therefor I have to work more the achieve sharp and crisp edges.

I'm going through a weird phase where all I seem to want to paint is triangle patterns. It feels like Picasso's blue period or something. Post graduation pattern slump?

I just finished this painting for the upcoming Autumn Society group show that is themed Dia de los Muertos. I don't get to paint people alot so I decided to do a portrait of the Aztec Goddess of the Dead. The flowers around her are Marigolds which are commonly used during the festivities of the holiday.

After devoting most of my spare time for the past week to being on the computer, I have finished the new and improved version of my website adriennelanger.com. I used dreamweaver to build the site, which took a long time, but for me is easier than trying to figure xhtml.

keeping busy

Having just graduated a few months ago, I'm finally feeling the slight sense of panic that what I choose do to with my art now is going to make or break me in terms of starting a freelance career. So I decided to revamp my webpage, because I wanted to achieve a more fun and professional look than the current one has. Until that is completed I am just having fun experimenting with painting different things.

Below is a jewelry box I bought from AC Moore, painted with acrylic.

Photographing out back of my house attracted some onlookers!

My room mate Cayt is also an illustrator, her work is cool.

Pattern Design

This pattern design has been in the works for a month now and I finally finished it. I designed it for my friends blog mcjawn, which is a philly art and culture blog. Doing the pattern the way I did is hard because you really don't know what the end result will be 'til you are finished and able to tile it together. I think it might've gotten a little busy with the contrast, but I am happy with it overall, hopefully my friend likes it!

Below is the first part of the image which has to be split into four corners, with a separate image painted in the new negative space.

Here is the resulting design, which is supposed to smoothly tile on the corners.

Euro Trippin'

So I am finally back on the scene after being away for 3 wks. in England and Sicily. My favorite parts of England are always walking around towns and looking at old castles and buildings. While there I was able to see my grandparents, uncle, aunt, and cousins, which is nice because we only see each other once every 2-4 years.

I managed to stay in Bristol for one night for the sole purpose of seeing the Banksy exhibit at the museum there. Banksy is a street artist who does a range of things including animatronics.

His art isn't necessarily my style, but the exhibit was well thought out, and fun to walk around.

This was the only drawing I managed to get done in me sketchbook. It's just a drawing form observation of a porcelain cat that was in my grandparents' sitting room.

I bought this Mighty Mugg blank from Urban Outfitters a few months ago for $4.99, and I haven't gotten a chance to paint it until now. Mighty Muggs are blank toys made out of recycled materials. This one stands about 6 inches high. It is loosely based on what my one friend whom I painted it for looks like.

Below is a spot about cloning animals, and India has claimed that they successfully cloned a camel. This is just my view on what a cloned animal would look like.

Senior Thesis Exhibition II

I would like to start with saying, the turnout for this years Ely Senior Thesis Exhibition was unbelievable! I appreciate that so many friends, family, alumni, and fellow students were able to make it out. Tofu

Hardest custom ever! But I still am very happy with the end product. Tofu the Vegan Zombie is a creation of Applehead Factory. Painting a toy Zombie is far off from something I would usually do, but I think that is what made this project new and fun.

I have him placed next to a Munny I painted last year for Jude Buffum's class.

For a special class within the illustration dept. here at uarts, Mike Perry was a guest artist that agreed to teach us for 5 weeks. Over the course of the class we had a small projects and one big project of making a group zine. So here's images of my section. The theme to the Zine was "It's Not Human." I did spreads for all of my 16 pages. This was fun!

At Jinxed gallery on February 13th, I will have this piece in the 3rd Annual Alex Curtis Memorial Heart Show, along with a ton of other artists, including some of my fellow senior illustration majors from uarts. This is one of my favorite pieces ive ever painted, possibly because the colors worked out well, oh yeah and it has cats in it!

Senior Thesis

Here's a preview of the project im working on for my senior thesis. Im making hand sculpted custom toys and painting them. The final product will be a photographed ad for my custom toys.

Form is hand made out of Super Sculpey, then sanded and painted in acrylic paint. This is my Japanese doll. I'm doing three other dolls from Russia, Kenya, and India. More pics to come!

So I haven't had much time for new posts, but here's some projects ive done in the past month.

Above is a painting I did, it is supposed to be editorial and would be for an article about green roofs and their benefits for the environment.

Digital Illustration

Within my style.. I believe it would be very easy to go to doing digital work because I paint in flat colors. For anyone who doesn't know me, my work is all painted with acrylic paint and I do it because I LOVE the process of mixing colors and the work that goes into doing a physical painting. For my one assignment I decided to do a full spread book cover for a field guide on birds, and it was my first digital piece. As you can see there is not much difference between the digital work and my other painted work but I think I'll stick to painting!

In the past self portraits have always been annoying for me to do because I would always get hung up on getting an exact likeness and wondering how I should render the figure. I think though that it's gotten to the point where I've been able to get past that and simply have fun with it. I tried to treat the face in a less stylized way then i've been doing recently, but still keep the work in relation to my current pieces. Below is the finished painting, done for John Twingley's class.

Here's a piece I did over the summer. It was supposed to be for the Illustration Friday topic fierce but I never completed it on time because it got a bit complicated. Also here's two pieces I've done this semester so far. Any feedback?

The above piece was inspired by an old house on 15th and Castle in South Philly. The color palette is one of my favorites out of ones i've used in the past.

This was an illustration I did for the 2008 Fringe Festival (for an assignment) it wasn't actually used for the event.

Catch Up

So I haven't posted anything in awhile, which I apologize for but the end of this summer was hectic and I did not have ready access to a scanner. I ended up participating in another hump day show at Rare Breed, and then a black light show August 29th at Pedestrian on 3rd near South street.

So I am making my first visit with my sister Zoe for the summer where she lives in Fort Green. Yesterday consisted of walking around Williamsburg, playing four square in a park there, and watching some people play hardcore kickball. As usual when I'm around her I have done another drawing and since I've been stuck in the lab with her I put some color on with a little photoshop magic... I dunno if you could call it magic though I'm pretty new with the program.

Her hair is my favorite thing to draw in the world! Other than animals..
